Trail Information:

This stage begins in the village of Safti, where there is a small shop and a homestay, then slowly climbs south and east into the hills behind. This valley is lush and green most of the year round, and there are environmental protection laws in place in this region (and through stages 5, 6 and 7) that are stricter and more successfully enforced that in the rest of the KRI. Thus the wildlife is more plentiful and the flora less impacted by unregulated development.

The route crosses a number of streams and small waterfalls, and passes the ruins of an old village. The stone of the original buildings can still be seen on the hillside. At a place called Asumarah, walkers will encounter a seasonal camp where semi-nomadic shepherds stay with their animals. There is a large waterfall here, which is great for cooling off in during hot weather. Another path runs north along the stream to the touristic site of Zoragvan, but the trail continues east, and ascends back into the hills.

The paths for the second half of this stage can become overgrown, and the ZMT can only advise a suggested corridor - the best exact path may be within 10-15 metres of the GPX track. The local guides will keep you on the best path. After reaching the high point at 1200 metres, with spetacular views, the routes continues down into the village of Alka. Currently there is not a homestay available in Alka, but guides in Safti or Harbo can provide a transfer to their villages and back to the trailhead.

It’s useful to note that on the other side of the river is Shanidar cave, where Neanderthal remains were discovered. Any of the homestays in Stages 4, 5 and 6 can arrange a visit.
