The first 5km of this stage follow the route of the Great Zab river on its southern side, a couple of hundred metres above it. Then it climbs on a well-defined shepherds’ trail to a ridgeline, with huge views to the south-east and the route ahead. This is a great place to sit and rest for a while after the steep ascent. The route descends to an iron bridge, and along small tracks that parallel a dramatic line of spiked mountains that resemble a dragon’s back. Once, under Saddam Hussein’s leadership of Iraq, there were plans to flood this whole valley by damming the river. Above the dragon’s back you may spot rows of houses and a mosque, which were built for the workers of the dam project that, thankfully, never happened.

There is a second bridge crossing at Hanary, and a couple of small shops. Also look out for the strange house decorated like a Disney movie castle! The final 5km climb again from the river to Khalan village. There is a homestay available here, and also one in nearby Qamyran village, which a local guide can take you to. Please be aware that this is quite a long stage, without much shade in the middle section.
